Wycoff a fréquenté le Wilmington Junior High School et le Phineas Banning High School à Wilmington, Los Angeles , Californie.
Wycoff a joué des claviers et a chanté dans les spectacles de talents de l’école.
Wycoff a chanté en back-up sur l’album Songs in the Key of Life de Stevie Wonder . Il a signé un contrat solo avec RCA et a sorti trois albums entre 1981 et 1983, marquant quelques singles à succès sur les charts R&B américains. Son deuxième album, Love Conquers All , comprenait la chanson « Looking Up to You », qui a été échantillonnée par le groupe de R&B des années 1990 Zhané sur leur chanson à succès, » Hey Mr. DJ » en 1993. Bien que ses deux premiers deux albums sont acclamés par la critique musicale, les ventes restent faibles.
Wycoff a succombé à une dépendance à la drogue et à l’alcool. Sa dépendance lui a finalement causé la perte de sa carrière, de sa maison et de sa famille, et Wycoff s’est retrouvé sans abri. Au fond, il a retrouvé son chemin à travers sa foi, battant son habitude et devenant finalement ministre de la musique dans plusieurs églises de la région de Los Angeles.
Son fils aîné est un DJ qui, en mai 2013, a sorti son propre album intitulé A Boy and His Toys sous le nom de DJ Michael Wycoff.
