Hakeem Abdul Olajuwon (born January 21, 1963), nicknamed « the Dream« , is a Nigerian-American former professional basketball player. From 1984 to 2002, he played center in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Houston Rockets and eventually the Toronto Raptors. He led the Rockets to back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995. Olajuwon was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008 and the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2016. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest centers, as well as one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
he was an MVP and a 12x All Star, so it’s safe to say he received a healthy dose of official recognition during his career. Although in terms of fame and stardom he was probably somewhat underestimated compared to his peers. Olajuwon was a soft-spoken immigrant and didn’t have a media personality like his fellow big men, the polite David Robinson or the goofball Shaquille O’Neal, nor did he play in a big media market like Patrick Ewing. Another reason for his relatively low profile was that Olajuwon had never made a deal with a major sneaker company. Instead, he signed with Spalding and endorsed a line of low-cost shoes. Olajuwon explained this decision in terms of social responsibility. “How can a poor working mother with three boys buy Nikes or Reeboks that cost $120?… She can’t. So kids steal these shoes from stores and other kids. Sometimes they kill for them.
