Lyn Collins was one of the greatest funk voices of the 1970s who remains relatively unknown to the general public, even though some of her songs are famous. She has never been credited for a number of hits of which she is the author, including the title Think (About It), sampled several times, both by rappers (Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock), Kanye West, J Dilla, Curren$y, Slick Rick, Immortal Technique, Dilated Peoples[1], among others), as well as by house DJs; James Brown has indeed sometimes tried to minimize the role of his protégés.
In her work alongside James Brown as in her solo work (the two albums Think (About It) and Check Me Out If You Don’t Know Me by Now), she demonstrates energy and charisma, which earned her this nicknamed Female Preacher by James Brown.
Her career as a funk singer (she remains the reference of the genre to this day) coincided with the life of the People Records label, then owned by James Brown (between 1971 and April 1976). All his hits are labeled People Records and orchestrated by James Brown’s house band, the JB’s.
