La chanson « I Like It » de Grand Puba, sortie le 20 juin 1995, est une fusion dynamique de rap et de R&B. Produite par Mark Sparks et co-produite par Grand Puba lui-même, elle présente des paroles écrites par Grand Puba, Anthony Martin, El DeBarge, Bunny DeBarge, Randy DeBarge, Arthur Ross, Leon Ware, Dick Addrisi et Don Addrisi. Avec CBMIX aux commandes du mixage et Specialty Records Corporation pour la découpe au vernis, la chanson a été enregistrée aux Platinum Island Studios, avec Troy Hightower en tant qu’ingénieur du son principal et Armen Mazlumian en tant qu’assistant.
« I Like It (I Wanna Be Where You Are) » utilise des échantillons de « I Like It » de DeBarge et de « Never My Love » de Cal Tjader. Elle a également été interpolée avec des éléments de « Betcha By Golly, Wow » des Stylistics, « Tears » de Force MD’s, « I Wanna Be Where You Are » de Michael Jackson, « You Are Everything » des Stylistics, « Do What You Do » de Jermaine Jackson, « High Power Rap » de Crash Crew et « Wishing On a Star » de Rose Royce.
La chanson a inspiré plusieurs autres artistes, avec des morceaux comme « Tu Croyais Quoi ? » de La Konso’, « Set Me Free » de Juice WRLD, « The Baddest » de Joey Bada$$ (feat. Diddy), « Venus » de Zion I et « I Like It » de Pat G, qui ont tous échantillonné ou interpolé « I Like It (I Wanna Be Where You Are) ».
Des remixes de la chanson ont également été produits, notamment « Grand » de Curren$y, « I Like It (Buckwild Remix) » de Grand Puba (feat. Sadat X) et une version remixée par Pat G. « I Like It » reste un morceau emblématique qui a marqué l’ère du rap et du R&B des années 90.
« I Like It (I Wanna Be Where You Are) » est le premier single de l’album de Grand Puba de 1995, « 2000 », où Grand Puba parle des femmes chercheuses d’or, tout en mettant en valeur sa capacité à couler parfaitement, alors qu’il interpole plusieurs chansons à succès du passé. « I Like It (I Wanna Be Where You Are) » figurait dans le Top 100 américain de 1995, culminant au numéro 91. « I Like It (I Wanna Be Where You Are) » a été utilisé comme bande originale pour le jeu de skateboard de 2004 « Tony Hawk’s Underground 2. »
